The only Revolutionary War battle in Vermont took place on the rolling hills of the Hubbardton Battlefield during the early morning hours of July 7, 1777. The successful American rear guard action led by Cols. Seth Warner, Ebenezer Francis, and Nathan Hale protected the American Northern Army, which was withdrawing from Mount Independence and Fort Ticonderoga. It was the first time the seasoned British and German troops under Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne met American resistance. The battle helped set the stage for the British defeat at Saratoga in October. The marble monument, erected in 1859, is one of the oldest Revolutionary War battle monuments in the country. The battlefield retains much of its original setting and is highly evocative of the time of the battle. Visitors can enjoy exhibits, including a narrated fiber optic map, in the visitor center, a walking trail with markers, and special living history programs.
