Fort Ticonderoga Organizes Grand Encampment of the French and Indian War for 2006 Event Named a Top 100 Event by the American Bus Association

Fort Ticonderoga will present the annual Grand Encampment of the French and Indian War on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25 from 9:00 - 5:00. The event, which is the largest and most spectacular of the reenactments presented each season by Fort Ticonderoga, was named by the American Bus Association to its Top 100 Events for 2005. This prestigious national tourism award recognized events that bring maximum entertainment value to the public. The encampment is also part of the national 250th Anniversary of the French & Indian War Commemoration.

This year over 800 men, women, and children reenacting the British, French, Canadian, American, and Indian forces and their dependents will camp around the Fort. These reenactors provide an unforgettable experience that magically transports visitors back in time to Fort Ticonderoga during the French and Indian War when the superpowers of the 18th-century, France and Britain, fought for control of Lake Champlain.

Throughout both days, visitors to the Fort can wander among the military camps and ask reenactors questions about military life, period uniforms, weapons, and camp life. Informal drills will also take place throughout the day. Visitors can walk through the civilian camp where men, women and their children have set up their own makeshift camps. The civilian reenactors portray refugees who followed the army for a variety of personal reasons. Some were driven from their homes before or after battles, others looked for a means of support through chores or selling wares as sutlers. Demonstrations will be given in the civilian area throughout the weekend.

To assist visitors planning their day, daily schedules are provided in the Log House that include detailed maps of the Encampment. Visitors who wish to see inside the Fort walls and tour the museum, and see the battle, must purchase admission tickets in the Log House. There are no additional fees beyond regular Fort admission for the Grand Encampment. A free shuttle van takes visitors from the car parking area to the Grand Encampment throughout the day.
