Volunteer Spotlight: An interview with Fort Ticonderoga Volunteer Paul Breslin

Q. What prompted you to become a volunteer at Fort Ticonderoga?

A. I’ve always had an interest in Fort Ti since my parents brought me here as a kid. I became a Friend of the Fort in 2007 and the following year I starting volunteering on the 18th-century hut building project I heard about in the local paper. The next year I worked on recreating the French Lines and volunteered for special events.

Q. What advice do you have for someone considering joining the volunteer ranks?

A. Be flexible and realize that the Fort can use all the help they can get. The Fort relies on many volunteers, not just a handful. There is a variety of skills needed; something for everyone and often a job can be found that fits my schedule.

Q. What have you learned through volunteering at the Fort?

A. I’ve met a lot of interesting people by volunteering at the Fort. I experienced reenactments from a different perspective and have now bought an outfit and attended the encampment socially.

Q. What is your favorite aspect of helping out during special events?

A. I like helping people and watching their reactions to what is happening around them. It’s great to see the excitement of the guests as they arrive. I also enjoy the evening when the campfires are lit.
