Preservation & Stewardship:
Pell Family Legacy

William Ferris Pell
William Ferris Pell (1779 – 1840), businessman, horticulturalist and preservationist, purchased the Garrison Grounds and stopped the pilfering of stone from the Fort ruins. His summer home-turned hotel, The Pavilion, offered room and board to travelers visiting the historic ruins for nearly sixty years. The Pavilion and Fort are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Stephen Pell, great-grandson of William Ferris, and his wife Sarah undertake restoration of the Fort and revive the Pavilion as their summer home in 1908. Fort Ticonderoga becomes a popular tourist destination and The Pavilion a private family retreat.
Today members of the Pell family serve as members of the Fort Ticonderoga Association and Board of Trustees.
